A boatman takes half as much time in rowing his boat for a certain distance downstream than upstream. What is the ratio between his speed of rowing the boat in still water and speed of current?

Speed of boat in still waters = x km/h

Speed of stream = y km/h

Distance travelled = d km

Time taken to travel downstream = \(\frac d{x+y}\)

Time taken to travel upstream = \(\frac d{x-y}\)

Then,

\(\frac {2d}{x+y} = \frac d{x-y} \) ⇒ \(x:y = 3:1\)
